When producing milk or beverages, harmful bacteria, spores, and spoilage microorganisms can quickly ruin products or shorten their shelf life. UHT treatment follows a highly controlled engineering cycle that typically broken down into these three main phases.
Pre-Heating and Homogenization
The liquid is pre-heated using energy recovery from previous stages then passed through a homogenizer to break down fat globules and create a smooth/uniform texture.
Ultra-High Temperature Sterilization
The product is rapidly heated to 135°C–150°C using direct heating (like steam injection) or indirect heating (like plate or tubular heat exchangers) and held for 2 to 4 seconds.
Rapid Cooling and Aseptic Filling
The sterilized liquid is quickly cooled down to ambient or filling temperatures and sent directly to an aseptic packaging machine to prevent any recontamination.
